Restoring Soil the way it was Designed to Function.
ByDesignSoil helps farmers, ranchers, and landowners restore depleted soils and move beyond chemical dependency by rebuilding soil biology where it matters most-in the field.
As a SoilFoodWeb Certified Consultant, I combine hands-on assessment, practical transition strategies, and straightforward education to help soils function as living systems again. Grounded in proven soil science and faith-based stewardship, my work is focused on resilience, profitability, and caring for the land the way it was designed to work.

Why Biology Matters
Healthy soil is a living system, not a chemical recipe. When soil biology is depleted, nutrients stop cycling, structure breaks down, water infiltration suffers, and crops or forage become increasingly dependent on outside inputs. Over time, this leads to rising costs, diminishing returns, and land that struggles to recover from stress.
Biology brings soil back to function. Diverse microbes drive nutrient availability, build stable aggregates, improve water holding capacity, and support resilient plant growth. By restoring biological balance, soils can once again feed plants naturally, reduce the need for synthetic imputs, and respond better to drought, compaction, and grazing pressure.
At ByDesignSoil, biology-first management is guided by measurable soil science and faithful stewardship. The goal isn’t to chase trends or eliminate tools overnight-it’s to work with the living systems already designed into the soil, restoring health, productivity, and long-term sustainability from the ground up.
Biology-First Management
Soil Functions as a living system
Nutrients are cycles naturally by microbes
Improves soil structure and aggregation
Better water infiltration and holding capacity
Builds long-term resilience
Reduces dependency on outside imputs
Supports plant health from the roots up
Works with how soil was designed to function
Biology vs. Chemistry
Chemistry-Dependent Management
Soil treated as a delivery medium
Nutrients must be applied repeatedly
Can degrade structure over time
Increased runoff, crusting, and compaction
Creates short-term responses
Locks operations into rising input costs
Forces growth regardless of soil conditions
Overrides natural soil processes
Bottom Line:
There’s a better way-one that restores biology, reduces inputs, and honors stewardship.
How It Works
Assess Your Soil
You send us a soil or compost sample(s) and so we can see what’s really going on in there. Using a microscope is a critical part of the overall strategy.
Learn The Options
Restore the Soil Food Web
Based on this analysis, we will provide you with a report which shows the ranges for your plants that you want to grow. Or if your compost contains the microbes to repair your soil.
Consultation
We provide specialized support in creating a Biologically Complete Compost, Compost Teas and Compost extracts. And methods to apply them to soil to convert “dirt” back to soil.
Consultation can be online or onsite.
The SoilFoodWeb Approach has been used to successfully restore the ecological functions of soils on six continents. The courses offered by the SoilFoodWeb School have been designed for people with no relevant experience – making them accessible to individuals who wish to retrain and to begin a meaningful and impactful career in an area that will help to secure the survival of humans and other species.
